December 2022 Newsletter – From the cellar

2022 harvest

2022 season was unusual from the very beginning, placing us in front of a unique scenario and presenting us with new, but exciting challenges.

The harvest began on August 30th, 15 days earlier than the average. In addition to the precocity, the last harvest was marked by the speed with which it was carried out, since the grapes were harvested in just three weeks.

As mentioned in the section dedicated to the vineyard, all grapes, without distinction of variety, were beautiful and with an optimal health condition at the time of the harvest. However, it was only at the end of the fermentation that we could breathe a sigh of relief! In fact, during the first tastings at the winery, we were extremely impressed by the finesse and unexpected freshness which characterize our new wines.

Specifically, Barolos from 2022 are showing great complexity and depth, beautiful colors, thick tannins, but fine that favor a harmonious and elegant result.

Those who know our winery know that our goal has always been to produce wines that are authentic expressions of our territory. Just to pursue this result and to characterize even more our wines, starting from this year, we have chosen to use indigenous yeasts selected from our vineyards located within the MGA Ravera for the Barolos’ alcoholic fermentation, to preserve the territorial identity, while avoiding unpleasant disadvantages during fermentations. Following the excellent results obtained with our Langhe Nascetta del Comune di Novello, which we ferment with indigenous yeasts selected within the municipality of Novello from 2020, we decided to go further along the same lines with Nebbiolo grapes for Barolo. After the first tastings, we can say we are satisfied, as last Barolos are already proving to be stratified and multi-faceted.

As for the new releases on the market, we presented the 2021 Langhe Nascetta del Comune di Novello Anas-cëtta during last fall. We are in front of a wine which is wide and rich on the nose, offering yellow pulp fruit aromas and citrus notes of grapefruit and lime, with Mediterranean herbs and saffron. The mouthfeel is suggestive thanks to the harmony among juiciness, lively freshness, and persistent savouriness. Elegance and substance go hand in hand during the tasting experience and are followed by a long finish of great impact.

Some advances

2019 Barolos are almost at the end of their aging time. The 2019 Barolo Cascina Nuova and the 2019 Barolo Ravera have already been tasted by some wine critics, including Kerin O’Keefe, who assigned 95 and 98 points respectively.
In addition to the release of these two labels, the 2018 Barolo Ravera Bricco Pernice and the 2017 Barolo Ravera Ris. Vigna Elena will be soon presented.
